If you ever get the opportunity, visit the beautiful city of Almaty in Kazahstan. And while you’re in Almaty, don’t miss the incredible 1907 Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Ascension near the Panfilov War Memorial.
It’s known locally, however, as Zenkov Cathedral, in deference to its architect, who made it earthquake-proof. Built without nails, it’s one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world (184 ft / 56 m).
Inside the magnificent cathedral you’ll find a treasure trove of icons and frescoes. For a unique experience, visit Zenkov Cathedral when services are taking place.
