Goats in a tree in Morocco are certainly one of the more memorable surprises of travel.
If you’re traveling in Morocco you’ll find Marrakesh to be a colorful, captivating, and intriguing city. It’s a fascinating place which, unlike several other Moroccan cities such as Casablanca, Tangiers, and Rabat, hasn’t yet totally succumbed to 21st-century technology and tourism.
That isn’t because technology doesn’t exist in Marrakesh, it’s just out of sight. The reason is that for the most part the Old City is still as it has been for centuries. Inside it’s walls there’s no traffic and no traffic lights. All its streets look pretty much as they did 500 years ago.
On the Road Outside Marrakesh
You’ll also find that true in the countryside outside the city where you’ll sometimes come across goats in a tree in different areas of the country. We found ours on the road between Marrakesh and Essaouira.
The goats climb the thorny Argan trees searching for its fruit which contains a small nut. The nut is used to make the Argan oil prized in cooking and cosmetics. Although the animals can actually climb trees, farmer bring them to the Argans to feast on the Argan fruit. The goats eat the pulp of the fruit but can’t digest the small nuts, which then pass through its digestive system.
Once out of the goat, farmers gather the nuts for sale in the market. They’re prized because the goat’s digestive system softens the nut. As you might expect, farmers also make an additional income charging tourists to take photos of their animals.
